Highlights CHC2DOD/E – Grade 10 History

Semester 1 was a smashing success for both my Grade 10 Canadian History classes as the students surpassed my overall expectations.

Starting with the World War I summative, both classes produced superb newspapers documenting the Canadian involvement in the Great War. In the second unit they went on to write some extremely creative stories using slang words from the 1920s and then topped off the Roaring 20s and Dirty 30s unit with spectacular dramatic performances depicting various famous characters from the time period. It was a delight to see the students researching, writing a script, and bringing to life the stories and contributions of such luminaries from the 1920s as Henry Ford, Foster Hewitt (from Hockey Night in Canada), Emily Murphy, Coco Chanel, Mary Pickford as well as the infamous gangster, Al Capone.

The crowing jewel for the semester was the students’ World War II summatives. They were given four options from which to choose: a Picture Book, a Magazine, create a Radio or, Television Broadcast from the Western front. The students loved this activity as evidenced by the high quality of work submitted. Most of the Picture Books and Magazines were well researched and written. The images were tasteful and serve to enhance the overall design of the pieces of work. The Radio and Television projects were just breathtaking. The students went all out to record or film their pieces and creating a feel as if they were living through the experiences of the war. Never before have I seen such high standard of work. It was not surprising that for one of the classes the overall average was above 80% while the other was in the high 70s. See images below.
