There are many exciting activities and subjects to check out in science. Feel free to join us for the Science Club, the annual Science Olympic competition, or mentor another student though Peer Tutoring. Read on for a summary of each subject area.
Physics
Roller Coasters, lasers, catapults, and holograms - what do all of these things have in common? They can all be explained by the laws of physics. Physics is the study of the world around us – it explains everything from the smallest particles to the most gigantic galaxies. The physics program at FMSS will introduce you to mind-blowing concepts that will stretch your understanding of our whole universe.
Hands on investigations and labs will explore and explain the laws of nature: how and why things move; production and conservation of energy; sound and music; light and geometric optics; electricity and magnetism; Einstein’s theory of relativity; radiation and much more! You will many opportunities to apply your knowledge since you will design and build musical instruments, microscopes, electric motors, thrilling roller coasters and projectile “rocket” launchers.
An understanding of Physics will provide you with the skills needed to be successful in any of your future endeavors.
Biotechnology
From a drop of blood, a strand of hair, or a few flakes of skin biotechnologists can diagnosis a disease or identify a criminal. Ever wonder how they do it? Biotechnology is a rapidly expanding domain that offers a variety of opportunities in fields as diverse as law enforcement; forensics; health sciences; or the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries.
The Science department offers a wide variety of pathways for exploring and studying biotechnology at the academic or college level. Come join the biotechnology team at Fletcher’s Meadows and become part of Canada’s fastest growing and revolutionary area of study.
Chemistry
Do you ever wonder what things are made of? From cell phones, to plastics, to soaps and perfume – these products exist because of chemistry! Learn how to make medicines; investigate the behaviour of solids, liquids and gases; and make spectacular fireworks. Chemistry offers students the opportunity to explore many of these issues using cutting edge technology.
Students will make gooey slime; separate ions out of water (that is almost like finding gold); and explore the fascinating world of chemical reactions. By joining the Fletcher's Meadow chemistry program you will gain knowledge and skills that will deepen your understanding of chemistry in your day to day life.
Biology
Are you fascinated by the shows CSI, House, or without a Trace? Believe it or not, Fletcher’s Meadow Biology offers you an opportunity to jump into that T.V. crazy world and learn some of their fascinating techniques. Imagine taking a sample of your DNA and combining it with the gene that makes a jellyfish glow? Or would rather the opportunity to show off your creative flare by designing your very own unique animal.
Explore the origins of life, the makeup of life, all your systems, diversity of life, or simply how you inherited those dimples in your cheeks. With the help of progressive technology, our courses explore all of these fascinating frontiers of biology…and more!!
